Maastricht Greeters
wandeling

People who like their city, and have an afternoon.

Neighbours, retired teachers, students.

Nobody here is paid and nobody is on a rota. A greeter walks with you because they felt like showing someone their city that week. No qualification is required beyond enthusiasm and a few free hours.

I moved here for university in 1978 and never got round to leaving. Showing someone the Jekerkwartier is the cheapest way I know to feel new here again.

I taught geography for thirty-one years. Now I get to do the good part of the job with none of the marking.

A greeter in Lisbon walked me round her neighbourhood for three hours and refused a coffee. I have been trying to pay that back ever since.

My route always ends at the same market stall. Nobody has complained yet.

People arrive expecting the Netherlands and leave having eaten Belgian, spoken German and heard a dialect they cannot place. That moment is the whole hobby.
A greeter

These are unattributed on purpose. A greeter’s name appears on this site only where that greeter asked for it.

Meet one of them.
